To Chen Tongfu: An Inspirational Piece
—To the Tune of Ten Beats
By XIN Qiji
Tr. ZHAO Yanchun
I watch my sword in tipsy lamp glow;
Camp in, camp out, to my dream conks blow.
The smell of beef grill, Hundreds shared by all,
The strings plucked to surge with the frontier’s sound.
Soldiers rush to gather for a roll call.
The steed like a unicorn runs fast;
The arrow shoots, thunder-like, aghast.
I wish I could settle all neath the sky
To win a good name that is carved with pride.
Alas, my white hair grows I sigh.
