A Reply to Bai Juyi, Who Writes Me a Verse at Our First Meeting at a Feast in Yangzhou

By LIU Yuxi

Tr. ZHAO Yanchun

Ba’s hills and Chu’s rills, what a bleak-chill place!

For twenty-three years I’ve myself there laid.

I’ve heard the homesick flute tune all in vain;

Now back home, all’s changed, axe-handle decayed.

A thousand sails pass by the sunken boat;

Before the sick tree plants and grass grow up.

I would give my ear to your song today,

To boost myself up with wine in the cup.
